Summer Newsletter 8
Dear Parents & Carers
Yesterday, our school councillors had a wonderful trip to London; they managed to squeeze in a trip on the London Eye before visiting the Houses of Parliament. They visited the House of Lords & the House of Commons before taking part in a workshop at Parliament’s education centre on democracy. During their tour, they spotted Jeremy Corbyn giving a speech & later on saw a couple of members of the House of Lords having a snooze in the chamber! The day was rounded off with a slap-up meal in an Italian restaurant. The children were brilliantly behaved & showed great interest in the workings of our democracy. Maybe we’ve got one or two budding politicians in the making… I’d like to thank Mrs Coleman & Mrs Mowatt for leading the trip – not only is it a very long day, it’s a huge responsibility too. The children loved every minute of it & were a real credit to themselves, their parents/carers & our school throughout the day.
Our local MP, Bill Esterson, visited school today to congratulate us on the outcome our recent Ofsted inspection. He was joined by Carol Richardson, our local councillor & one of Woodlands governors too. We had a tour around school & our visitors were impressed with what they saw: tidy-up time in nursery a sight to behold; our reception children were in their outside classroom enjoying the good weather; Y1&2 were working on their moving vehicles as part of their DT topic; we saw a Y3&4 class practising their times tables in the computer suite: Y5&6 were creating semi-regular tessellating patterns in maths. Mr Esterson then met Woodlands School Council – it was just like an episode of Question Time! He was quizzed on a range of topics from new housing to habitat destruction, from school funding to the best of his job as an MP. I’d like to thank Bill for taking the time to visit us.

This week, our whole school attendance is 94.2%, which is down on last week & still a long way short of our 97% target. We only had 1 class which bettered 97% attendance: 4C (97.4%).
We had 6 classes who had no late marks this week (Green Class, Yellow Class, 3/4M, 4C, 5/6P & 6R). We’ve had 20 late marks across the whole school. 19 late marks ‘before the register closed’ – that’s before 9.20am & 1 late mark ‘after the register has closed’, that’s after 9.20am.
We’ve had a request from the organisers of the Formby Festival (15th, 16th and 17th July in Duke Street Park) for children to enter items to be judged in the Children’s Show Tent. Trophies & certificates are awarded to the best entries. Children are invited to bring their entries by 11am on Saturday 16th July to be judged in a range of categories: cakes, cookies, brownies, vegetable people, flower arrangements and miniature gardens. For details and entry forms, please go to the Children section on Formby Festival Website.
