Summer Newsletter 01 [Friday 21st April]
Dear Parents & Carers
Week one of the summer term completed. The children have settled back down to work as brilliantly as ever. We’ve had new starters across school & are pleased to welcome them & their families to Woodlands; I’m always impressed with how kind & caring our pupils are when helping new classmates find their feet in school.
I’ll be sending a more comprehensive end of year event list home later in the term but I thought I’d give you a ‘heads up’ for our sports days:
- Wednesday 5th July – KS1 (Green, Purple & Yellow classes)
- Thursday 6th July – Reception (Red & Blue classes)
- Friday 7th July – KS2 (3G, 3/4M, 4T, 5D, 5/6P & 6R)
I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you to a member of staff who is leaving us today. Thomas, Mr Ryder, one of our lunchtime welfare assistants, is leaving for pastures new. His calm, assured manner will be missed by the children & staff of Woodlands – he treated everyone with kindness & respect, whether sorting issues on the junior playground or administering first aid. We wish him all the best in the Highlands!
Here’s this week’s ‘nudges’ to help you find out about your children’s learning:
Nursery
How can you be a good friend?
{Personal, Social & Emotional Development}
Reception [Red & Blue]
Can you talk about the things seeds need to grow?
{Understanding the World}
Y1&2 [Green, Yellow & Purple]
What is a continent? Can you name them?
{Geography topic: ‘The Seven Continents’}
Y3&4 [3A, 3/4M & 4G]
What facts have you learnt about India & China?
{Geography topic: ‘India & China’}
Y5&6 [5D, 5/6P & 6R]
Tell me about the ‘Big Bang’ theory.
{Science topic: ‘Astronomy’}
This week, our whole school attendance is 95.6%, which is an improvement. We had no classes with 100% attendance this week & 2 classes reaching or exceeding our 97% target: Red Class (98.2%) & 3/4M (97.0%).
We had had 2 classes who had no late marks this week: 3/4M & 5/6P. We had 33 late marks across the whole school. 33 late marks were ‘before the register closed’ (that’s before 9.20am) & 0 late marks ‘after the register has closed’, that’s after 9.20am.
From next week, our KS2, junior, children will be able to return to playing on the school field each day after they’ve finished their lunch (weather & dampness of grass permitting). Please ensure your child has a pair of trainers to change into so they can go onto the field. If they don’t have a change of footwear, they will not be allowed to go onto the grass.
Please remember, due to the implications of ongoing industrial action, various activities of the school are being changed and amended, including some classes being closed. As things stand, Woodlands will only be open to children in the following classes on Thursday 27th April:
- 3G
- 4T
All other classes in school will be closed to children on that day, including our nursery class. I will contact you if this situation changes. School will be fully open again to all pupils on Friday 28th April. A further strike is scheduled for Tuesday 2nd May.
I hope you have an enjoyable weekend.

Last word
I stayed up all night wondering where the sun had gone…
then it dawned on me.
