Spring Newsletter 8 [Friday 8th March]

Dear Parents & Carers

World Book Day was a great success! Thank you to Mrs Crilly for organising it all. The children loved either going to other classes to read or having visitors come to their class to be read to. The Great Book Swap was a triumph – with every child in school being able to take home a ‘new’ book at the end of the day. Thank you to everyone who helped their child bring in a book to swap – your wrapping skills were appreciated & the cryptic messages helped the children decide if the book would be for them.

Thanks to Mrs Rimmer’s efforts, we’ve been fortunate to become involved in a very special project. 'Coastal Voice' is a project by award winning charity Music in Mind to capture and celebrate the heritage of a number of Britain's coastal towns. The project is based on the concept that how we speak reveals so much about who we are and the model simply uses the medium of speech and dialect to open an exploration of the cultural heritage and identity of each place; unlocking the themes of immigration, diversity, industrial heritage, regeneration and aspiration. The first part of the project is called 'Explore' and we were excited to welcome John McHugh to Woodlands, who ran the first of 6 weeks of workshops in music and dance for our children in Years 3 and 4. The work created during the workshops will then form part of the 'Performance' and 'Legacy' phases of the project that will lead to the creation of a multimedia video opera, based on the sounds of the local speech, to be performed at Southport's Atkinson Theatre in October 2024 with musicians from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Similar projects have been run before. I've copied a link below to a short BBC1 documentary about their 'Fleetwood Voice' project from 2019 that worked with the community in Fleetwood to explore their heritage, accent and identity: www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EmrysrXmGI&t=12s

Here’s this week’s ‘nudges’ to help you find out about your child’s learning…

Nursery

Can you explain how to cross a road safely?

{Understanding the World}

Y1&2 [Green, Yellow & Purple]

Who was Boudicca & what did she do?

{History topic: ‘Romans’}

Y3&4 [3A, 3/4M & 4G]

What landmarks would attract visitors to Northern Ireland?

{Geography topic: ‘Northern Ireland’}

Y5&6 [5D, 5/6P & 6R]

Can you explain the significant role that Bletchley Park played in helping the Allied Powers to win WWII?

{History topic: ‘World War II’}

This week, our whole school attendance is 94.1% - well below our 97% target. We had 1 class with 100% attendance – congratulations to 3/4M. We only have 1 other class equalling or bettering 97%: 3G (97.0%).

Much better news with punctuality. We had 5 classes who had no late marks this week: Red Class, Yellow Class, 5D, 5/6P & 6R. We had 15 late marks across the whole school. 13 late mark were ‘before the register closed’ – that’s before 9.20am & 2 late marks ‘after the register has closed’, that’s after 9.20am.

We’re looking forward to seeing our Y5 parents & carers at Come Dine with Me next week (Wednesday 13th March). Please arrive at the school office at 11:20 – you need to have booked a place & paid. The meals on offer for parents & carers are:

  • Meat & potato pie with carrots & gravy
  • Mac ‘n’ cheese with broccoli & garlic bread

I hope you all have an amazing weekend.
