Week beginning 20th February

Date: 21st Feb 2023 @ 5:12pm

This week we started with a WOW moment. A break-in that turned our creative area upside down! The children loved the set-up scenario and it inspired them to do lots of writing in the first couple of days. They wrote reports about what happened and how we could solve the mystery of who did it. We focussed on writing in the first person and used our phonics skills to match letters to sounds. This week we are hoping to learn lots about the police. We have got a visit from a police officer on wednesday when he will talk to the children about what his role involves.

You could talk to your child about what they would like to ask the police officer. Maybe they could ask some questions when he visits.

In mathematics we are learning to count pairs of things like socks and shoes. We are using the vocabulary odd and even and even starting to count in 2's. We are also combining groups to make addition sentences and even problem solving using the part-part-whole model. We used 10 frames to help us record our number sentences.

You could try counting a few pairs of socks at home. You could fine other things around you home that come in pairs too.

We are also looking at uniforms of different groups of 'People who help us'. As it is our new topic we are spending lots of time dressing up as fire fighters, builders, doctors, nurses, police, paramedics and many more. We are really encouraging the children to use their role-play and communication skills.

In our creative area we have been painting police uniforms on ourselves. We have been choosing suitable colours and talking about what police officers wear and why.

We had a fantastic visit from 3 police officers on Wednesday afternoon. They told us all about their role in the community and what they do when they are working. We asked them a wide range of questions that provided answers to help us find out more.

This week we tried really hard to be write a 'Wanted' poster for a theif without any help from the adults in our Reception unit. When we had finished our teachers were really proud of us.

In our investigation area we looked at refuse workers who help us. We looked at how they sort materials and waste from our homes and school. We tried sorting some materials into groups.

We have enjoyed dressing up and using our role play skills to act out how people help us in the community.
