Week beginning 10th October

Date: 6th Oct 2022 @ 3:50pm

This week we are continuing to read a wider selection of Elmer books. We will be reading Elmer and the rainbow. We are focusing on colours and singing songs with colours in to improve our communication and language skills.

You could sing songs about colours that you know at home. You could also find different colours around your home and name, sort and group them

We will also be reading non-fiction books about elephants and learning facts about their habitats, size, features and diet. We will be drawing and painting elephants, mixing colours to make grey.

In mathematics we will be subitising. This involves us looking at small groups of objects and marks and saying how many there are without counting. We will be looking at the numbers 1, 2 and 3 and ordering them, finding 1 more/less.

At home you could count out 1, 2 and 3 objects. you could try and find the numbers around your home.

In RWI phonic sessions we are continuing to learn set 1 sounds. We are recapping all the sounds we have covered so far: m a s d t i n p g and moving on to o c k. We are really engouraging the children to segment and blend.

You could try saying the sounds we have covered with your child when reading the books that we have sent home. This short clip helps you to say the sounds. https://schools.ruthmiskin.com/training/view/NsYwQ2e3/oXNdWmJs

We have had a very creative week using paint, collage materials and printing with blocks to explore colours through our Elmer stories.

We had a great time in our 'Outdoor Learning' session. We read Percy and the Treasure Hunt by Nick Butterworth and then we went on our own hunt around the copse. We followed the picture clues that Percy had left for us and they led us to some chocolate coins in the fire circle. We worked as a team and followed the clues that were left for us.

We drew and painted elephants after learning about where they live in the wild. We talked about how Africa is far away and has a different climate. We learnt about what elephants eat, what they use their trunk for and how they keep cool.
