Reception- Week beginning 8th January
Date: 10th Jan 2024 @ 5:38pm
Happy New Year
Many thanks for all your lovely cards and presents that we received for Christmas.
This term we are reading a wonderful story called 'While The World is Sleeping'. It teaches the children all about nocturnal animals. In Literacy we are writing captions and short phrases about animals that wake up at night time and sleep during the day. We are focusing on holding the words in our heads before we write them down.
You could talk to your child about different animals that they have seen, like your own pets at home, animals on a farm or a zoo. See if you can find out if they are nocturnal.
In mathematics our topic is called 'Alive in 5'. We are really embedding our skills with numbers. We are also talking about 0 or zero. We are encouraging a quick recall of bonds that make 2, 3, 4 and 5. The children are encouraged to subitise numbers without counting them and we have been saying what we can see when we look at random sets of objects.
You could place a few objects like items of food, pencils, small toys etc in front of your child and see if they can say how many up to 5. They should look for patterns like 4 and 1, 2 and 3, 5 in a row.
We are linking our learning to the season of winter as we will soon to looking at animals that hibernate. We have been printing hedgehogs, making caves for bats and using collage materials to make owls.
