Reception- Week beginning 29th January
Date: 30th Jan 2024 @ 4:18pm
This week all our learning is centred around the 'frozen planet'. We will be looking at what it is like in the North and South pole. We will be learning about the types of animals that can survive in cold weather and how they have adapted to their surroundings. We will be reading 'Penguin Small' by Mick inkpen. We will talk through the story and draw maps to show the beginning, middle and ending. It tells the story of a journey that we will track using a world map. We will be linking our learning to geography and science. We will explore what happens to ice when it is placed in a warm room.
You could look in your freezer at home and talk about what has happened to the food. You could look at what happens when you take it out. You could also put water and other liquids into the freezer and see how quickly they freeze.
In mathematics we are learning about 6, 7 and 8. We will be subitising and looking at different ways of representing the numbers using 10 frames, dots and numberals. We will be grouping and sorting numbers and objects that are the same.
You could look for these numbers around your home and local environment.
In R.E. we are talking about what places make us feel safe. We will be reflecting on our homes, school and other ideas that the children have. We will link this to special places in the community and cross reference it with our geographical skills and maps of the local area.
You could go on a walk around Formby, the village, beach, woods and talk about the special places in our community.
The children will be making penguins from the story we are reading and painting icebergs. We will be encourging them to follow instructions to work independently in the creative area.
We will be developing our language skills through making up stories and playing with arctic and antarctic animals.
